Xtera to upgrade submarine network for Global Crossing
Looks like network infrastructure provider Xtera Communications will continue maximizing the capacity of Global Crossing’s (NASDAQ: GLBC) submarine cable network. Xtera announced Tuesday that it has been awarded a new contract to upgrade a legacy system fiber pair on Network Segment C of Atlantic Crossing-1 (AC-1), which links Brookhaven, N.Y. to Whitesands, United Kingdom. Xtera will use its NXT Submarine Terminal Line Equipment to upgrade the segment’s capacity from 2.5 Gbps to 20 Gbps. The Submarine Line Terminal Equipment (SLTE) is placed at the ends of the cable and is located in landing stations that are on the shore. James H. Watts, vice president, Transport & Infrastructure Engineering at Global Crossing, pointed out in a news release that combined with upgrades made in 2009, Global Crossing has added more than 1 Terabit of capacity on AC-1. Last year, Xtera upgraded two segments of AC-1 for Global Crossing, which manages a global IP-based network. Segments A+B2, connecting Brookhaven, N.Y. to Sylt, Germany and Amsterdam, increased capacity. A capacity upgrade was also made to the Pan American Cross (PAC) express fiber pair connecting Fort Amador, Panama and Grover Beach, California. For more: Related articles:
