Verizon Working Hard On FiOS IPTV? – Including some kind of integration with game consoles?
A source informs (or tries to) Technologizer that the company is rushing to make IPTV a reality. The report quotes a Verizon insider as saying the company is “late to the game” — and is testing an IPTV platform in employee homes that somehow involves integration with game consoles like the Playstation 3:
But the report seems to confuse real IPTV — and paywalled TV Anywhere Internet video content. If the latter then it’s no secret — given that Verizon just announced plans to offer Time Warner (TBS, TNT) TV Anywhere content in June. If the source was talking IPTV (and it seems likely), this idea of game console interoperability is an interesting one. People have long been eager to see game consoles that can double as an IPTV set top (a FiOSTV IPTV Xbox 360 blade, anyone?). Given that Verizon isn’t officially commenting either way, we’ll have to keep an eye peeled for more concrete details (we love insider tips).
While Verizon runs fiber to the home, inside the home they still (unless you request Cat-5 runs, which sometimes can be difficult to coordinate with the company) — they’re still using coaxial and MOCA for home networking. Meanwhile, unlike AT&T’s U-Verse, FiOS TV isn’t technically IPTV — it’s RF video delivered over a coaxial connection — and only widgets and video on demand are delivered via IP.
