Louisiana Loses $80 Million Broadband Grant – Project Fell Too Far Behind Schedule

Louisiana is losing an $80 million grant intended to expand broadband service in the state. The grant was intended to help in deploying 900 miles of fiber to anchor institutions including universities, schools, libraries, healthcare facilities with residential expansion down the line. However, according to the Daily Advertiser, the project fell too far behind schedule to meet the conditions of the grant, and the grant has been revoked without a chance for appeal. Louisiana is the first state to lose their broadband stimulus funding, though Wisconsin returned the grant money due to pressure from AT&T, who was concerned it would increase regulatory scrutiny of their BadgerNet operations in the state.
