Global Crossing hits home run with MLB.com

Global Crossing (NasdaqGS: GLBC) is applying its networking expertise to help MLB.com, the official Web site of Major League Baseball, distribute live streaming video and related game information to its growing online video subscriber base.

Under the terms of the agreement, Global Crossing will provide IP VPN connectivity over its MPLS network to its 30 MLB ballparks and the MLB/com servers in New York City. To get the service up and running, Global Crossing installed 155 Mbps fiber access loops at each of the league’s ballparks and a 2.5 Gbps access loop in New York with a connection to Global Crossing’s network.

MLB.com’s subscribers will only be able to watch a full season of 2,430 live games in HD video quality, but also get real-time access to baseball news, statistics, in-game video highlights and other information about their favorite teams on their PCs or respective mobile devices.

The win with MLB.com shows Global Crossing’s continued movement into the online video space as a provider of both traditional network connectivity and Content Delivery Network (CDN) capabilities.
