Corning Can’t Keep Up With Verizon Fiber Demand – As Company Continues Builds in Major East Coast Cities

Verizon's FiOS deployment has essentially stopped if you're in a market that hadn't already signed a franchise agreement with the company, leaving roughly 40% of the company's customers still on DSL. That doesn't mean Verizon isn't deploying a lot of fiber still -- after they signed huge franchise deals with New York City, Washington DC, Pittsburgh, and Philadelphia. We've covered how these city builds utilize smaller ONTs for apartments and Corning's new bendable fiber, which makes installs easier. "We're actually sold out in fiber right now," CFO Jim Flaws told Reuters conference attendees this week, noting they've received orders roughly 20% larger than they had expected from Verizon. "Their connection rate is higher than what they originally forecast," notes Flaws, the company likely burning through a lot of fiber with their post 2008 focus on city MDUs.
